Philosophy of Care
After 20 years I still learn something new every day, whether it is from AAP PREP questions, or looking up a rash, or reading all the consult notes from specialists to see how they manage diseases and how I could do better at picking up on things. I am always tailoring my history and physical exam and impression/ plan to evidence-based medicine. I like to challenge myself. My goal with every single patient is to make the family feel "listened to". An office visit is for parent and child and teen to have their voices heard. Another goal with every single patient is to learn about them outside of this office visit. What are stressors for this family ? (a grandparent with cancer, a lost job due to pandemic, did they just re-locate to the area, a divorce). What are their happiest times ? (a recent trip to Disney, a sport, playing the trumpet, a new baby sibling) I mourn with them and celebrate with them. I like to keep a private "running commentary" in the EMR regarding each patient I see, because a patient is not just a number to me
