Community Health Centers of the Rutland Region Awarded Bronze Level in Vermont's 3-4-50 Worksite Wellness Program

Rutland, VT – Yoga classes, weight reduction competitions, smoking cessation incentives, farm market produce, a campus vegetable garden, a wellness committee and a monthly newsletter filled with recipes and healthy living ideas are all part of the workplace incentives offered to those who are keeping others healthy in central Vermont’s largest community health network. Community Health Centers of the Rutland Region (CHCRR) went tobacco free in July, but that is only one of the reasons why Vermont’s Department of Health has recognized CHCRR as a Bronze Level employer for promoting health and reducing the risk of chronic disease in the workplace.

“Our mission is to take care of the patients in our community, to provide them excellent care and make sure those needs are being met,” said Anna White, CHCRR human resources manager. “We want to be sure our employees’ health care needs are being met too. We want to promote wellness both for our patients and our employees.”

CHCRR became a Bronze Level employer in the state’s 3-4-50 program as a result of the wellness measures in place throughout CHCRR’s network of primary care, pediatrics, urgent care and dental centers in Rutland, Castleton, Brandon, West Pawlet and Shoreham. The measures include creation of a wellness plan and a wellness committee, promoting Vermont’s 802Quits smoking cessation resources, adding smoke-free signs around the campus, providing a private lactation location, celebrating employee wellness achievements and encouraging activity breaks.

The 3-4-50 name was derived from these state statistics about the health of Vermonters: 3 behaviors (lack of physical activity, poor diet and tobacco use), that lead to 4 chronic diseases (cancer, heart disease/stroke, type 2 diabetes and lung disease), resulting in more than 50 percent of all deaths in Vermont each year. 3-4-50 connects businesses, schools and communities together with a common goal of making the healthy options the easy options for daily habits. CHCRR wants to help employees stay on track with their health goals while they are at work. In addition to the wellness measures already in place at all of CHCRR’s locations, new and simple measures will be added over time.

Here are a few of the ways CHCRR is leading the way:

  • Creating a tobacco-free workplace
  • Implementing a healthy food and beverage policy
  • Participating in wellness incentives provided by their health insurance carrier
  • Offering on-site wellness activities and incentives
  • Providing biometric screenings

“I’ve gotten positive feedback that people like the wellness incentive program,” White said.  “It conveys a message to employees that we care not only about patients, but about employees as individuals and that we want them to be healthy and we want to encourage them to develop healthy habits so that they are happier. When you are healthier you are more productive and you are a more balanced individual. So it’s a win-win,” she said.
